Grout (or grouting) is the mixture of sand, cement and water that keeps tiles in place. And this can be difficult to keep clean. To make cleaning easier, it is recommended that you get your grout sealed every 2 years. This allows your grouting to become considerably more resistant to stains, grime, oil and discolouring.
But, sorry to say, you still have to clean it and a simple mop over will simply not be suffice. Here we have provided a list of the three best ways to bring your grout back to sparkling white again.
- Vinegar and Ammonia. Mix together 7 cups of warm water, 1/3 of a cup of ammonia, ½ a cup of baking soda and ¼ of a cup of white vinegar. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake well. Spray enough of the mixture over a small area of grout so it is dampened, and let it sit for 3 – 5 minutes. Scrub the grout with a hard bristled cleaning brush – a toothbrush is ideal. Use a damp cloth to wipe up the dirty liquid on your tiles and then do a final wipe-down.
- Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda. Mix together enough hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to form a thick paste. Spread the paste onto your grout using your finger or a toothbrush, making sure to completely cover the grout while keeping the solution thick. Let the mixture set for 5 to 10 minutes and then use a small brush to scrub the grout, applying firm presser. If needed, repeat the process on dirty areas, then wipe off the remaining paste with a damp cloth.
- Oxygen Bleach. Mix together equal parts of oxygen bleach and warm water, then allow the mixture to dissolve. Cleaning more than half a square meter at a time, pour or spray on the bleach mixture making sure the grout is thoroughly coated. Leave it to work on the grout for 15 – 20 minutes and then rub the grout using a small brush. More bleach can be added as you scrub to keep the area moist. When you are finished the area use dry towel to mop up the dirty water and then begin on your next area.
